FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We collect water solely from flowing freshwater sources such as rivers, named bayous, streams, creeks, and brooks. Historically significant man-made freshwater canals, like the Erie Canal, may also be included. In exceptional cases, we may consider non-freshwater waterways like the culturally significant Bosporus Strait.

To ensure the authenticity and provenance of our river water, we employ a multi-step verification process. This includes video and photographic documentation of collection sites, coupled with GPS location tracking. Additionally, we collaborate exclusively with thoroughly vetted members and volunteers who represent the River Mixer during water collection.

Part 1: Shipping regulations

Great news! Shipping non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-explosive, and odorless liquids that are also classified as non-hazardous typically doesn’t require special permits. However, regulations can vary depending on your location and the carrier you choose. It’s always best to double-check with your preferred shipping company for their specific requirements.

Part 2: Description for shipping

When describing the contents, it’s best to be clear and concise while adhering to the carrier’s guidelines. You can consider something like: “Spring water for personal religious practice (or art), hand-collected and bottled.” This avoids mentioning “fresh water” which could be interpreted broadly, and focuses on the intended use for religious purposes.

The water we collect isn’t meant for consumption. It becomes part of our treasured collection, a source of inspiration and unique keepsakes.

Airlines have restrictions on liquids in carry-on luggage. However, liquids exceeding those restrictions can be safely transported in checked luggage.

Collecting river water can be safe, but it’s important to be selective. Avoid any water sources that appear visibly polluted or are known to be contaminated. If you’re unsure about a specific river’s safety, your best bet is to check with local environmental authorities. They can provide the most up-to-date information on water quality in your area.

We’re a for-profit membership-based social enterprise built around the unique concept of ‘River Mixerism.’ This philosophy we created fosters awareness and appreciation for rivers and their rich cultural significance. Through River-Mixerism, we connect people with the stories and traditions woven into the world’s waterways.

Each river contributes just 500 ml (16 oz) [or less] of its story to our collection, ensuring a unique representation of waterways around the world. We limit our collections to a single sampling trip per river.

After collection, we carefully transfer the 500 ml (16 oz) of river water into a labeled, lab-grade brown plastic bottle. These opaque bottles help protect the water from light exposure. The bottles we use are designed for safe storage of chemicals and have a wide mouth opening for easy filling and a screw cap to ensure a leak-proof seal. The bottles typically measure 170 millimeters tall and 73 millimeters in diameter (approximately 6.69 inches by 2.87 inches). We store these sealed containers at room temperature.
